Other Corporealities

“Other Corporealities project” is an Arts & Wellbeing project. It is interested in capturing and revaluing the beauty of those dancing bodies that fall outside of the norm and the mainstream rules, looking beyond what society thinks a dancer “should look like” or how long are we “allowed” to keep on dancing or moving.

Who's the artist?

"My name is Coti Cibils, and I am from Argentina. I have been based in Sydney since 2018. I am a dancer and photographer  specialised in dance with 10 years of experience. I have a degree  in design, a degree in Contemporary Dance, and a Postgraduate in Interdisciplinary Arts.   Since arriving in Sydney, I have collaborated with artists like Bonnie Curtis Projects in dance and photography and Gabriela Green Olea with our Latin American Arts Calle Collective, with which we received Creative Australia International Exchange funding. Since I arrived in Sydney pretty close to the Covid “era”, I have shifted most of my day work  into a more health movement oriented environment. I have been teaching pilates and biomechanical movement in physiotherapy and pilates studios, working with a variety of bodies from 9 to 80 years old, from desk workers to pre-professional dancers at Sydney Dance Company.
Although I have a variety of skills, and my work is quite interdisciplinary, all my interests revolve around the human body and the body in movement, which guide and connect all my practices together."

Women's in Dance

The 'Other Corporealities' project, which was developed in 2016, brought together a series of female dancers whose bodies did fall out of the dance norm due to acute scoliosis (with and without surgery), scars, body shape, or size that were not compatible with the dance standards in Argentina at the time. The project consisted of a series of pictures and personal testimonies about their experiences in the dance world, as well as statements on some of the recent news related to the topic that year. All this material was used to create an art installation.

“I have severe scoliosis, and I underwent spine surgery 16 years ago. They placed two titanium prostheses on each side of my spine to contain it and prevent further deviation. Visually, my back is far from the norm for dance, as the scar from the operation runs from my neck to my waist. Additionally, since I still have scoliosis, I have a shoulder blade that sticks out and a kind of hump on the left side of my waist. I also experience pains similar to those my mom has, who is a woman in her late 50s. It was my love for dance that gave me the strength to do everything I do today. It was this titanium prosthesis that forced me to find new ways to reach the same places. It was the experience that shaped my life and my personality forever. That's why I love telling my story and the scar on my back, even if it's not the sexiest or most beautiful according to beauty standards.”
